The Good;
- URL’s are descriptive of the page, some even contain location (ohio)
- Site contains good internal links with good anchor text
- Owner added google local profile
- Great Page Rank, decent backlinks in Yahoo
- Area of Practice pages have decent content with targeted lists
The Bad;
- Homepage has almost no text on it, and its mostly in Flash
- No meta description or keywords on any pages
- No H1 or H2 tags
- Alt tags missing on all images
- Sites uses tables for layout; CSS layouts are preferred
- Content is limited
Recommendations;
- Add meta description & keyword tags for all pages.
- All links, Address, phone, City and State should be in HTML.
- Further develop content. Specifically, criminal law and PI are both very in-depth areas of practice; consider building a site specific to each.
- Most consumers aren’t using words like “personal injury” to search for a lawyer, (its such a ‘lawyer word’); they use words like “car accident” or “dog bite”, so be more specific. Same with criminal law; first time offensers may not know that some charges, such as DUI, fall under ‘criminal law’.
- Drop ’splash page’, and use the same template as the rest of the site for the homepage. Homepage also needs significant amount of content.
- Convert Wordpress blog URL’s to permalinks with a /%category%/%postname%/ URL structure. 301 redirect indexed url’s to new urls.
- Covert header to HTML.
- It looks like many of your anchor text keywords are phrases like “ohio lawyers”, etc. These are quite general, and while you might rank for some of these keywords, it may be more effective to target keywords specific to the areas of law you practice; ie, Ohio divorce lawyer – or more specifically, Dayton divorce lawyer, Dayton landlord/tenant attorney, etc.
Notes / comments: while it has no affect on SEO, the load time on this site is extremely slow, which may affect usability and reduce time visitors stay on the site. The wordpress blog pages are being indexed much more often and higher than the regular site pages (see our article on Wordpress for SEO).
On legal websites in general: If you were a patient looking for a heart surgeon… Would you hire the surgeon who was only a heart surgeon exclusively, or a doctor who did heart surgery, dermatology, oncology, and gynecology?
Potential clients who have suffered a personal injury are trusting thier future to one legal professional. It’s an important decision for them. A website specific to PI, criminal, or family law will make a potential client feel that you are more of an ‘expert’ in that one particular area; whereas a site that says “we do it all!” may not suffice.
